Jin Mogake Shiboridashi small

Tokoname teapot for premium Japanese green tea

Tanikawa Jin's artwork.

The pattern on the surface is achieved with "Mogake technique" developed back in the 19th century. The teapot is wrapped with Amamo seaweed, which reacts with the clay and oxidizes during firing. The result is this unique finish, bearing the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.

An ideal teapot for Japanese Gyokuro.

Handling precautions

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!

Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like a stove, and never use it in a microwave or oven.

Cleaning:
Tea stain is the natural part of a teapot's "maturing process", but if you prefer to avoid it, rinse the teapot well after every use, and do not let the tea leaves sit in it for too long. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your pot. Never use bleach!
Avoid using the dishwasher or dryer!
As you touch it, your hands' natural moisture might leave stains on the surface. You can easily remove that by gently rubbing it with your fingers.

Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.

Non-glazed ceramic tea pots absorb scents and flavors, so only prepare one class of tea in them (green tea, black tea, roasted tea, etc).

This is my 3rd tea vessel from Master Jin Tanikawa. Master Jin's shiboridashis pour extremely well and make the drinking experience memorable. I steeped the Shuppin and Tencha in this vessel, and the pour was very smooth until the last drop. The tea leaves do not escape through the vessel's lip and the seal is tight when the hot water is in the vessel. The lid does not rattle or move during the pour hence enabling a swift and calculated pour especially on teas that have a sensitivity to prolonged heat exposure or over steeping. Like the other two vessels I have from Master Jin, this is also another almost weightless artifact - the form and function of Master Jin's vessels are always excellent. The walls of the vessel are thin but the heat distribution around the body and the lid is even and very comfortable to handle. I like Master Jin's shiboridashi vessels for the Senchas in comparison to the houhin by him. Master Jin's houhin vessel has all the characteristics of his shiboridashi however I found that it steeped the Taiwanese High Mountain teas best. Aesthetically, Master Jin's tea vessels never disappoint. he is a master of the Mogake technique. Simplicity and subdued elegance at its best.

Lovely for brewing gyokuro for one person given its capacity. Also looks beautiful and is well finished.

Love it, love it, love it. Tea meditation for one has been so lovely with this little beauty. It didn't take as long as I expected to get used to using my first 絞り出し shiboridashi—about a week, really. It's suitable for the fine Japanese green tea that I reserve for special moments. It has definitely made more intimate those quiet moments of contemplation in the Great Hidden Mountain, where I live and practise the art of mindful living with my monastic brothers and sisters.

This is my second Shiboridashi from Jin and I'm absolutely thrilled. As small as it is, the poured tea is concentrated. A real masterpiece

It's more beautiful than in the pictures, because there is a shiny pattern. It's great for 5 grams gyokuro and 40 ml water, it will fill it and it's easy to measure. Also the gyokuro lasts longer, because it is so small.
