Description

The expression of overlapping beautiful cracks like a crystal is called “kan-nyu.”

The origin of this “kan-nyu” expressed by the beautiful blue of a celadon porcelain is traced back to Chinese ceramics.

Potteries are more glazed than usual and kilned at about 1,300 degrees Celsius, and then scaly cracks appear on the glassy glaze in the process of cooling because of the difference in shrinkage rates between the fabric of porcelain soil and glaze.

This crystal technique which expresses the scale-like overlapping of glaze was devised at Riso kiln place in Kyoto. It is now widely used because its details has been disclosed to the public to foster the development of the industry.

Though the same technique is used throughout the country, works by Riso craftsmen are second to none. Their pottery gives its user’s hand a marvelous heavy feeling which nicely matches sake and tea in it, and it has characteristically an elegantly subdued and restrained presence.
