当時（江戸時代）、その年の初めの茶摘みで摘み採られた茶で碾いた抹茶のことをいう。
初昔と後昔の銘は宇治茶師がそれぞれの家の筆頭のお茶銘としていた。

I approached Hatsumukashi matcha from Kanbai Shunmatsu Honten with genuine curiosity and fairly high expectations. I deliberately chose the 200 g can, wanting enough volume to truly understand the tea. How it behaves over time, across different preparations, and beyond a first impression. At this price point, I felt it deserved a proper, unhurried evaluation. The matcha itself is… fine. Competent. Drinkable. But that’s also where my enthusiasm ends. Hatsumukashi carries the distinct nutty profile that I associate strongly with Kanbai Shunmatsu’s matchas. This characteristic is consistent across many of their offerings, and here it is clearly present. However, in this case, the nutty note dominates without being supported by enough sweetness, depth, or individuality. The result is a flavor that feels familiar but not memorable. What ultimately held this matcha back for me is its positioning versus price. Hatsumukashi sits in a range comparable to Marukyu Koyamaen’s Tenju or Horii Shichimeien’s Premium Narino. Two matchas that, for me, deliver immediate clarity, sweetness, and a desire to return cup after cup. With those teas, I look forward to my next chawan. With Hatsumukashi, I found myself asking a different question: Do I actually want to drink this again? As I worked my way through the can, that question kept resurfacing. I never disliked the experience, but I also never felt drawn back to it. For this level of investment, I expect a matcha to impress me, to invite repetition, to feel special even on an ordinary day. Unfortunately, Hatsumukashi didn’t quite get there. In the end, it’s an acceptable matcha, but not a compelling one. Given the alternatives available at a similar price point, I’m unsure I would repurchase it. For me, it lacked the sweetness, uniqueness, and emotional pull that define a truly satisfying koicha-grade matcha.

This matcha is addicting especially with the dark chocolate notes. I want to get the 100g but it's definitely expensive for a reason. - @matchamalist

It’s great but I wouldn’t get it again. I like other options from this brand than this one. I don’t see distinct flavor notes in it but it’s creamy and I see it as a good choice of matcha powder.

This matcha is delicious and is best appreciated as a koicha. It has a delicious dark chocolate flavor that is undeniably addictive.

This is a phenomenal koicha matcha. I was skeptical given the price, but it definitely holds its own with Horii Shichimeien and Marukyu-Koyamaen. As a koicha it is resplendent with cacao notes. It's a nice match as usucha, but you miss out on its intensity. A good treat matcha.
