Matcha Isuzu

Classical thin tea (usucha) with the name of Ise Shrine’s river called ‘fifty bells’

Matcha Isuzu Matcha Isuzu

This is a bolder matcha than the Aoarashi which comes before it in the portfolio line-up, boasting a far more decisive character, flavors steeped in sharp, tart amino acids. It is a good idea to also try preparing it using lower temperature water (70 °C), as this will significantly take the edge off its tartness besides greatly softening its flavor.

The meaning of Isuzu "五十鈴" :
Marukyu Koyamaen received this name from Keikouin Shun, the former Grand Priest of Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine). The Isuzugawa River that flows through the inner shrine area of Ise Jingu is called “Mimosusogawa”, which is a name that comes from Yamatohime no Mikoto washing and purifying her garments in the clear waters of the stream. Inspired by this tradition of cleansing and refreshing one's mind and body in the clear waters of the Isuzugawa River before visiting the Grand Shrine, this tea came to be called “Isuzu”: enjoying and tasting both purity and clarity from a cup of matcha.

How to prepare

STEP 1) Put 2g (0.4 US tsp, 1 teaspoon or 2 chashaku scoop) matcha powder into a suitable tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 70 ml (2.4 fl oz) 80℃ (176°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Whisk with a chasen (tea whisk) until foamy.

❖ Before Step 1, Warm your tea bowl. (Optional) Pour hot water in it, then discard all the water and wipe the bowl dry with a cloth. During whisking a cold tea bowl might cool the water down too quickly, which could turn the matcha bitter.
❖ Sift your matcha powder. (Strongly recommended) Matcha clots easily in hot water. To prevent this, sift the powder through a fine strainer.
❖ When your matcha is ready, drink it immediately, because as it cools down it might turn bitter. (Recommended)
❖ Matcha is best fresh. Consume it within a month after opening. (Strongly recommended)

EXTRA TIP
❖ Try iced matcha: pour the finished matcha over ice.

Exactly what you would expect from Marukyu Koyamen's "Principal Matcha" category. It goes incredibly well with milk, has its own sweetness to the taste, and is very well-rounded, and smooth, without any overdeveloped flavors. I would recommend it to anyone who's trying to check out matcha and has a problem with umami scents etc. Incredibly

Matsu no Midori and this Matcha Isuzu are my favourite matchas so far of all the ones I've tried in the 30-40€/100g range. Price/quality I think Isuzu is even better. Great test, amazing green colour. Hoping Sazen will resume shipping to Spain soon, because I think that next time instead of ordering different matchas I'd go with this one.

So creamy with a hint of vanilla that really you can taste!. It smells wonderful and I will be asking for the big can on my next order. Indeed an easy matcha to drink for a beginner!

I discovered Isuzu accidentally and as soon as I did, the shop I purchased it from stopped carrying it. I went on a massive internet hunt and found it again at Sazen. It’s a perfect, light, morning matcha for me and tastes very smooth. I have it with an almond milk base. I used to do water and it is equally smooth and creamy tasting. I am not someone who is a perfectionist on matcha - I am a very average matcha drinker who switched to matcha from Indian chai to matcha at 42 for her health. I like creamy “sweet” matcha but I never use sugar. If this describes you, you will probably like this one too. I agree that it can be iced easily.

pretty nice and better than the most in it's price point. 2021 batch is not as good as some other years. I hope 2022 batch is better

I really like this one. Mild but has flavor. No grassiness or seaweed taste. A nice everyday matcha that won't make you poor.

Really nice, decent umami and enough depth and mellowness to be made into an excellent matcha latter.

A pick that is comparatively equal to the price you are paying. For me its a good choice that gives a kick but in a good way. I guess that's where the name 50 bells comes from. As mentioned by many, its an excellent everyday pick. It's easy to whisk, has an acceptable color, good nose as described by some and on the palate, its just as described by those before me. Surely beats my morning coffee =)

The most cost effective choice of any matcha on sazen. Slightly astringent and bitter, but quite enjoyable for an everyday matcha. Works well as cold brew too. I always buy the 100g bags to have on hand when I need a refill. Better taste/price ratio than anything comparable. More palatable than Aorashi. Can buy 3 times the quantity with international shipping of any comparable everyday matcha. You won't be disappointed.

The blend leans toward sharpness and starch notes which suggests you to use as daily usucha. It's balanced bitterness helps a lot for tinkling my sense to get ready for deeper sweet notes in the finish. A great value.

Very good. For several weeks I made it as thin tea first thing in the morning, and even tried it as thick tea once (pictured). It really invigorates the mind in a different way than caffeine alone would. Brings a balance and calmness even in stressful times, and helps you think clearly.

Its a really nice and soft flavoured Usucha. It smells really fresh and greeny with sea breeze notes. Tastes like green spinach, some notes like wheatgrass and has slight umami. I highly recommend it to beginners.
