Sencha tea cup by Heian Seishō, Kyoto

Wider than it is tall, this Kumidashi teacup was originally used for serving hot water or Houji-cha to customers before a tea ceremony. However, in an era when people tend to gulp rather than sip their tea, it is now also used as a Sencha cup.
It was created by the Kato family, Kyoto-based teacup artisans whose peerless artistry and craftsmanship has endured for three generations. While Kato Seisho the Third is responsible for the cup’s delicate bamboo designs, his father shaves the base to perfection. Such a beautiful result is achieved not by factory equipment, but rather through the timeless work of skilled hands and traditional techniques.
Before using the kumidashi, warm it up with hot water; then measure the amount of water needed according to the number of cups.

Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery is a symbol of Kyoto, and it's history has continued for 400 years. To serve the desire of Aristocrats, tea masters and culinary specialists of the era, Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery has incorporated design and artistry not only from Japan, but also from China and Korean Peninsula. To succeed the intricate artwork and craftmanship, each piece is made and decorated carefully by hand even till this day.
