Urasenke Endorsed Hekisuien Matcha

The Ura-senke is the largest sado school in Japan. It was named Ura (meaning “behind” in Japanese) because of the location of the school’s tea-room (called Konnichi-an). Seen from the street, the tea-room is located just behind the tea-room (Fushin-an) of Omote-senke school, founded by the legitimate heir of Sen Rikyu. Sen Sotan, the grandson of Rikyu, built the tea-room Konnichi-an as his retirement retreat. This tea-room, later inherited by his fourth son Sen Soshitsu, became the origin of what is called Ura-senke school today.

The Ura and Omote-senke schools are called, together with another school Mushanokoji-senke, the Sanzen-ke, the “three families” established by descendants of Rikyu.
