Yamanaka Nuri lacquer canister from Fukui prefecture
An exquisite, handmade and hand-painted natsume from Issei Minowa, a traditional Maki-e artist from Sabae city, Fukui prefecture.
A shidarezakura tree is painted on the lacquer with stunning detail. Shidarezakura refers to a type of cherry blossom tree, specifically a variety of weeping cherry. This tree is known for its graceful, cascading branches that droop downward, creating a beautiful, flowing display of blossoms.
"Maki-e" means sprinkled design. The master paints with lacquer and sprinkles powdered metal (most commonly gold or silver) on the picture.
A natsume is a tea ceremony tool used to hold matcha for the ceremony. The tea master scoops the required amount of matcha powder into the natsume during preparation. Designed for presentation rather than storage, it features a loose lid that is easy to remove and is not airtight.
