An exquisite, handmade and hand-painted Kutaniyaki teacup from Hōgaku Kōbō.

The traditional Japanese geometric patterns and plum blossom are hand-painted with stunning detail using the so-called Aka-e technique. Aka-e is one of the three major techniques used in Kutani ware. The artist creates patterns with extremely fine lines, as thin as a hair, using a red pigment known as bengara, which contains iron.

Pieces primarily produced in the Kaga region are referred to as "Kaga Akae" and are distinguished by their rich, deep red lines.

They say the long, freezing, and colorless winters of the Hokuriku region made locals crave colors and thus, Kutaniyaki, the traditional ceramic style of the region was born. Kutaniyaki is using vivid and bold colors, making their style unmistakable.

The cup comes in a paper gift box.

Place of origin: Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan

Handling precautions

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!

Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like a stove, and never use it in a microwave or oven.

Cleaning:
If you prefer to avoid tea stains, rinse the cup well after every use. Use gentle, organic soap to clean your cup, but never bleach! Do not scrub the teacup, because that might damage the paint.

Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.
