The chawan is created by Kim Jong-won—from the Baewon (or Baeyuan) Folk Ceramic Art Research Institute—a renowned master potter, celebrated with multiple prestigious awards and featured regularly in exhibitions across South Korea and Japan.

From the mid-sixteenth century, tea bowls obtained from Korea, commonly called Korai chawan, became very popular in Japanese tea ceremony. Korean tea bowls made during the Joseon era quickly integrated into and started forming the Japanese wabicha aesthetics. Korean chawan were known for their modest appearance and natural beauty.

This tea bowl is "idō-gata", or "idō-shaped" which means it recalls the classic features of "Idō chawan". “Idō” originally referred to Korean rice bowls from the Joseon period that were brought to Japan in the 16th century. Japanese tea masters, especially in the era of Sen no Rikyū, deeply admired their natural, unpretentious beauty. An Idōgata chawan typically features a slightly flared rim and a deep, tall profile with a curved body. It rests on a relatively high foot. The glaze is usually natural and earthy in tone with a subtle asymmetry. Glaze pooling, uneven textures, and small irregularities are common and are appreciated as expressions of rustic elegance within tea aesthetics.
