Porcelain gaiwan from the Kōrin Kiln
This handmade and hand-painted Hasamiyaki porcelain gaiwan features a serene landscape motif of mountains and water.
Hasamiyaki porcelain originates from the town of Hasami in Japan, with a history spanning over 400 years. Introduced from Korea, the technique involves high-temperature firing that vitrifies the surface, making it ideal for brewing all types of tea.
The blue-and-white design is created using a traditional technique known as sometsuke. First developed in China in the 12th century and adopted in Japan during the 17th century, sometsuke involves painting cobalt-rich blue pigments onto bisque-fired porcelain. The piece is then coated in a clear glaze and fired once more, producing the distinctive and enduring decoration.
The gaiwan comes in 3 sizes:
A) Small ✴︎ Capacity: 50 ml / 1.7 fl oz; Φ 7.2 cm, H: 7.5 cm
B) Medium ✴︎ Capacity: 70 ml / 2.37 fl oz; Φ 8.3 cm, H: 8.2 cm
C) Large ✴︎ Capacity: 100 ml / 3.4 fl oz; Φ 9 cm, H: 10.4 cm
Place of Origin: Nagasaki Pref. Japan

Before First Use:
Gently rinse the cup with lukewarm (not hot) water and allow it to dry thoroughly before using it for the first time.
Usage:
Porcelain is delicate and can crack from sudden temperature changes. Do not place the teapot over an open flame or on hot surfaces such as stoves. It is not microwave or oven safe.
Cleaning:
Rinse thoroughly after each use. Avoid using dishwashing detergents, but a mild, organic soap is acceptable if needed. Do not use bleach. Refrain from scrubbing, and do not place the teapot in a dishwasher or dryer.
Storage:
Always let the teapot dry completely before storing. Storing it while damp may lead to unpleasant odors or mold growth.

The medium-sized variation was my first gaiwan companion for personal use and hobby- for a while I was drinking everything from green to black using just this, often outdoors by riverbeds on nice days, to deskwork on indoor days. Easy and fun to use, just handle with care if going outdoors. Can recommend

At first I was slightly worried the gaiwan would be hard to handle due to the relatively straight shape, but it's quite ergonomic. The format is compact & light enough to be easy to handle, at least for a more experienced user. The 70ml version is a great size for solo brewing, the thickness of the porcelain is a nice balance between somewhat delicate but still retaining some heat. Looks and feels great, very happy with it, been using it almost every day since I got it!
