SPRING COLLECTION

From the mid-sixteenth century, tea bowls obtained from Korea, commonly called Korai chawan, became very popular in Japanese tea ceremony. Korean tea bowls made during the Joseon era quickly integrated into and started forming the Japanese wabicha aesthetics.

"Soba" and "Ido" chawan are some of the most famous Korean tea bowls. The origin of the name "soba chawan" is not clear. Some say it refers to its position beside the "ido chawan" (soba means beside), while others say it got its name from the color reminding of buckwheat (soba).

"Soba" tea bowls are flat and wide with a large base, thanks to which we can make stunningly beautiful foamy matcha in them.

This tea bowl is "ido-gata", or "ido-shaped" which means it recalls the classic features of "Ido chawan". It has a spiraled shape with five small unglazed marks (the shape of a plum flower) where balls of clay were used to separate the stacked bowls in the kiln. During firing, the clay releases gases that "paint" the surface, creating a unique finish.

The bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the artist.

Place of origin: Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

Handling precautions

Initiate the tea bowl first! Let the bowl sit wholly immersed in cold or lukewarm water for a couple of minutes and then let it dry naturally. Matcha patina is natural for clay bowls, but proper cleaning after use can make it develop slower.

After using the tea bowl, rinse it with water. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your bowl. Never use bleach!
Avoid using a dishwasher or dryer!

Avoid placing it on hot surfaces like a stove, and never put it in the microwave or oven.

Only prepare matcha tea in it.
