Red clay Tokoname teapot by Tanikawa Jin
Handmade Tokoname teapot made by Tanikawa Jin.
The teapot is made of "honshudei" clay, which is extremely rare and sought these days. During the urbanization of Tokoname, like in the case of many other cities, the new living areas were built on parcels previously used as rice fields. During that time, clay was gathered from under those rice fields. Up to these days, this approximately 50 years old clay is used for honshudei ceramics.
The Honshudei clay has a yellowish-brown color, that turns red during firing thanks to its high iron content. This teapot was fired in an oxidation chamber at a lower temperature for a longer time, which is why the warmer tone of the finish. In continual use, the surface will gradually become smoother and shinier.
The teapot is a light, very precise work, with a beautiful, smooth pour. It is ideal for both Japanese or Chinese teas.
These days, many potters use an electric kiln, but Tanikawa Jin still fires his works in gas kilns, carefully keeping an eye on both the fire and the temperature.

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!
Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like a stove, and never use it in a microwave or oven.
Cleaning:
Tea stain is the natural part of a teapot's "maturing process", but if you prefer to avoid it, rinse the teapot well after every use, and do not let the tea leaves sit in it for too long. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your pot. Never use bleach!
Avoid using the dishwasher or dryer!
As you touch it, your hands' natural moisture might leave stains on the surface. You can easily remove that by gently rubbing it with your fingers.
Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.
Non-glazed ceramic tea pots absorb scents and flavors, so only prepare one class of tea in them (green tea, black tea, roasted tea, etc).
