Celadon Takarazukushi Kensui

"Kensui" is a vessel used in Japanese tea ceremony for disposing of the water used to rinse and purify tea utensils. It plays an important role in both "sado" (matcha tea ceremony) and "senchado" (sencha tea ceremony).

The kensui features "takarazukushi", which is a traditional Japanese design motif that means “an assortment of treasures.” It refers to decorative patterns that feature a collection of symbolic lucky items, such as coins, scrolls, mallets, and other auspicious objects, arranged together. These motifs represent good fortune, prosperity, and abundance.

The kensui comes in a paulownia wooden box signed by the master.

About the artist, Yokoishi Kasuke:
13th Generation Yokoishi Kasuke (b. 1939) is a master ceramic artist of the Hirado ware tradition, born into the long-established Kasuke family of potters. The Kasuke lineage spans multiple generations, known for producing refined porcelain and tea utensils.
Trained from the age of 14 under the 12th-generation Kasuke and educated at Arita Technical High School, he went on to gain recognition at major exhibitions, including the Mainichi Ceramic Art Exhibition and the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
In 1984, he succeeded to the title of 13th Generation Kasuke, continuing the family legacy while dedicating himself to the quiet refinement of his craft, particularly in the field of teaware.

About Celadon Ware
Celadon ware is significant for its jade-like green glaze, refined forms, and technical sophistication, representing one of the highest achievements of East Asian ceramic art, especially in China from the Song dynasty. It embodied ideals of harmony, restraint, and ethereal beauty, and was closely associated with court aesthetics.

About Hiradoyaki:
In the 17th century, the Hirado daimyo family established a village of Korean potters and utilized their kilns to produce high-quality porcelain ware, which was then presented as diplomatic gifts to other lords, the shogun, or even the emperor.
The Hirado kilns became renowned for their white and celadon (Seiji) glazed porcelain. The distinctive jade green color of celadon is created by iron oxide in the glaze or clay, fired in a reduction chamber at temperatures of at least 1200°C. Celadon porcelain gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in China, particularly among scholars and intellectuals, and it spread to Japan around the 11th century.
