Matcha Hatsumukashi

Entry grade matcha for making usucha (thin tea)

Matcha Hatsumukashi Matcha Hatsumukashi Matcha Hatsumukashi Matcha Hatsumukashi Matcha Hatsumukashi

Hatsumukashi is a refreshingly bright usucha tea with a pleasant tart flavor. It represents the entry level of quality matcha teas, purposefully lower in terms of full-bodied, characteristic sweet flavors. This makes a great milder tea benefitting from lower temperature water, yet take care not to go below 75 degrees Celsius, as there this tea can tend towards bitterness. Step inside the world of powdered green tea – it will be a great beginning.

The meaning of Hatsumukashi "初昔" :
"Hatsu" means "new" or "first" "Hatsu no mukashi" is tea made from the leaves of the first harvest of the season.

How to prepare

STEP 1: Place 1.5–2 g (approx. ½ tsp or 2 chashaku (traditional tea scoop)) of matcha powder into a suitable tea bowl.
STEP 2: Pour 70 ml (2.4 fl oz) of 80°C (176°F) water over the powder.
STEP 3: Whisk (vigorously) with a chasen (tea whisk) until frothy.

❖ Warm the tea bowl with hot water first, then dry it thoroughly with a cloth. This helps maintain the ideal temperature and brings out the fresh aroma of the matcha.
❖ Sift the matcha powder through a fine strainer before use to prevent clumping (strongly recommended).
❖ Drink the matcha immediately after preparing it, as it may become more bitter as it cools.
❖ After opening the matcha packaging, consume all the tea within one month for the best experience.

It is very bitter and there isnt much matcha flavor for me. Maybe this should be for baking only ?

Overall good. Creamy and sweet but there are some branches. There is a little roughness in the grind that I feel in my throat. I don’t think I will re order it again

Well, for this price you can't expect too much complexity. You can drink at as usucha but I would recommend 85°C instead of 80°C. Also, eat something sweet or bitter before drinking this matcha to tame the bitterness. If you follow these recommendations, this matcha tastes actually pretty decent for this price point.

A lovely mix of grassy and cocoa. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Lovely unmaking and aroma. A lovely tea all around. I suggest at the very least you give this tea a try
