Handmade teapot by master Izutsu Toshihiko from the Tsukiyomi Kiln. As the name of the kiln also suggests, this beautiful, silvery-blue teapot recalls the deep, glowing, moonlit nights.

The shiboridashi has a relatively fast and precise pour. We recommend it for gyokuro, kabusecha and high grade Japanese green teas.

About the Tsukiyomi Kiln
Born in Kyoto in 1963, Toshihiko Izutsu is an award-winning ceramic artist following Kiyomizu-yaki traditions. After formal training and apprenticeship in Kyoto Prefecture, he established Tsukuyomi Kiln in 1992. He is mostly know of his tenmoku-glazed works and technically demanding firing methods that he has been refining over decades.

Yuteki Tenmoku glaze got its name from a remote Chinese temple it was first used, on the Tianmu (Tenmoku in Japanese and Heaven's Eye in English) Mountain. From the 13th century, monks in this temple drank their tea from tea bowls glazed with a special technique called yuteki (literally meaning “oil drop”). Tenmoku glazes can range in color and pattern, which makes every glazed piece unique with the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.

Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery looks back on 400 years of history and is now a symbol of Kyoto. To serve the desire of Aristocrats, tea masters, and culinary specialists of the era, Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery has incorporated design and artistry not only from Japan but also from China and the Korean Peninsula. Even up to now exquisite artistry and excellent craftsmanship are the core qualities of Kyo ware: each piece is modeled and decorated carefully by hand.

Handling precautions

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!

Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like stove, and never use in microwave or oven.

Cleaning:
Tea stain is the natural part of a teapot's "maturing process", but if you prefer to avoid it, rinse the teapot well after every use, do not let the tea leaves sit in it for too long. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your pot. Never use bleach!
Avoid using dishwasher or dryer!

Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.

Discovered Tenomoku teaware at Sazen Tea- I have this one (first one) and another one with a different oil drop glaze design- they really do the trick well when taking pictures of the tea outside on sunny days (at the beach) to good effect, making them effective for my outdoor tea hobby.

This shiboridashi is expensive, but I've justified the purchase by making it a birthday present for myself :-D. That being said, this is a wonderful piece of teaware, and worth every penny - I'm very happy with my purchase. The effective volume of this shiboridashi is 110-120ml, depending on the volume of tea leaves, which is perfect for me. It pours extremely well, fast with no drips. Due to the high lip, you can even fill it up to the lid with boiling water (e.g. for Oolong) without burning your fingers. And last but not least, it is extremely pretty. This shibo is a pleasure to look at and a pleasure to use!
