Seiji Tenmoku Chawan Mangetsu Utsushi

Handmade tea bowl, replica of the historical "Mangetsu" chawan, from Yokoishi Kasuke

Seiji Tenmoku Chawan Mangetsu Utsushi

This celadon tea bowl is a replica of a historical tea bowl known as “Mangetsu” – Full Moon. The prototype of this tea bowl was made at the famous Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province, China, during the Southern Song dynasty (12th–13th century) – the golden era of celadon production. The bowl was given the poetic name "Mangetsu" (Full Moon) by Ryoryosai Sōsa, the 9th generation grandmaster of the Omotesenke school of Japanese tea ceremony. He gave it this name because, when viewed from above, the bowl has a flawless, perfectly symmetrical circular form. The original masterpiece is preserved today in the permanent collection of the Fujita Museum in Osaka, Japan.

The exterior of the bowl is hand-carved with roughly 30 sharp, vertical lines mimicking lotus petals. Lotus, the flower that rises from murky waters is a gorgeous symbol of purity, both of the body and the mind. Of all lotuses, white is the emblem of spiritual perfection and total purity. It is the flower of Buddha, he often appears with lotuses, sitting on or surrounded by them. The tea bowl’s walls are so delicate that, when sunlight shines through them, the exterior pattern can be seen from within.

The tea bowl comes in a paulownia wooden box signed by the master.

About the artist, Yokoishi Kasuke:
13th Generation Yokoishi Kasuke (b. 1939) is a master ceramic artist of the Hirado ware tradition, born into the long-established Kasuke family of potters. The Kasuke lineage spans multiple generations, known for producing refined porcelain and tea utensils.
Trained from the age of 14 under the 12th-generation Kasuke and educated at Arita Technical High School, he went on to gain recognition at major exhibitions, including the Mainichi Ceramic Art Exhibition and the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
In 1984, he succeeded to the title of 13th Generation Kasuke, continuing the family legacy while dedicating himself to the quiet refinement of his craft, particularly in the field of teaware.

About Celadon Ware
Celadon ware is significant for its jade-like green glaze, refined forms, and technical sophistication, representing one of the highest achievements of East Asian ceramic art, especially in China from the Song dynasty. It embodied ideals of harmony, restraint, and ethereal beauty, and was closely associated with court aesthetics.

About Hiradoyaki:
In the 17th century, the Hirado daimyo family established a village of Korean potters and utilized their kilns to produce high-quality porcelain ware, which was then presented as diplomatic gifts to other lords, the shogun, or even the emperor.
The Hirado kilns became renowned for their white and celadon (Seiji) glazed porcelain. The distinctive jade green color of celadon is created by iron oxide in the glaze or clay, fired in a reduction chamber at temperatures of at least 1200°C. Celadon porcelain gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in China, particularly among scholars and intellectuals, and it spread to Japan around the 11th century.
