Yamaoka Zenkō's artwork.
Nanten, also known as heavenly bamboo, is one of the most significant plants in Japanese culture. Its vivid reds and greens make it visually stunning, but its symbolism is just as powerful. Traditionally, it is believed to transform adversity into good fortune and serves as a protective plant that guards homes against evil. Even today, many Japanese households plant nanten near their doors, often facing northeast, where, according to feng shui, negative energies were thought to come from. Nanten is also a cherished winter symbol and a traditional component of New Year’s decorations. Nanten can have either red or white berries (kōhaku - red and white), and this color combination symbolizes celebration and happiness in Japanese culture.
The bowl is coated with ash glaze. The splitting of glaze colors is a renown technique called "kakewake", widely used in Japanese pottery.
Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery is a symbol of Kyoto, and its history has continued for 400 years. To serve the desire of Aristocrats, tea masters and culinary specialists of the era, Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery has incorporated design and artistry not only from Japan but also from China and the Korean Peninsula. To succeed the intricate artwork and craftsmanship, each piece is made and decorated carefully by hand even to this day.
The tea bowl comes in a wooden box (pauwlonia) signed by the artist.
