Susudake Chashaku
Matcha tea scoop made of more than 200 year-old bamboo
This Susudake Chashaku is made of bamboo that had been used for the frames and roof timbers of a 100 to 200 year-old traditional house. Susudake (meaning “smoked bamboo”) is the name for bamboos whose colors have turned to red brown color from continuous exposure to the smoke of the “irori” (a traditional Japanese sunken hearth). As these bamboos are often tied with ropes as architectural material, some unexposed parts remain light-colored than others. Therefore each susutake bamboo is unique in its color and texture. However, the Susudake Chashaku is becoming more and more difficult to obtain nowadays. While the aged bamboo is popular for its anti-mold and crack quality, there are less and less traditional Japanese houses from which the bamboo is taken. Thus, the Susudake Chashaku is truly considered a rare chashaku made of precious and impermanent material.

Handling precautions
Cleaning:
If matcha powder sticks to chashaku, clean it with a dry cloth. Never use wet cloth, for the tea will start to steep into it and ruin the bamboo.
Do not use chashaku if damp! Always keep dry!
Do not expose to direct sunlight and avoid high temperature.
