Bamboo tea whisk made of black bamboo from Nara • approx. 64-tine chasen
$48.40 / unit
Matcha tea scoop made of more than 200 year-old bamboo
This Susudake Chashaku is made of bamboo that had been used for the frames and roof timbers of a 100 to 200 year-old traditional houses. Susudake (literally meaning “smoked bamboo”) got its name from its unique color. Due to constant exposure to the smoke from the "irori" (the traditional Japanese hearth) its color turns reddish brown. These bamboos are often tied together with rope, the parts once covered with ropes stay a lighter shade. There are less and less houses where susudake bamboo can be taken from, so this interesting and unique chashaku is becoming increasingly rare.

Cleaning:
After use some matcha powder might stick to the scoop. To clean it, always use dry cloth. Bamboo is extremely sensitive to moisture. If you clean it with wet cloth, the water and the matcha powder seep into the material and damage it. Make sure you keep it dry!
Do not expose it to direct sunlight!

This scoop has a lovely finish and it is useful to have when making matcha. Trying to approximate with spoons and scoops you have around the house doesn't give the same experience as using an actual chashaku.

My first Chashaku. I like the story behind it and the overall antique look and feel. It does the job but it’s up to each and everyone to decide if the premium price worth it. If you have spare money just buy it. It’s a piece of several hundred years old Japanese traditional house and using it to scoop Matcha is pretty cool. It’s a rarity, cool accessory with a history, but definitely not a necessity.

Gorgeous hue and perfectly balanced chashaku. Love this history of the item too.

I'm studying Japanese tea ceremony with the Omotesenke school. Our school appreciates sober and elegant tools and this chashaku really exudes a feeling of simplicity and "wabi sabi". So precious!
