Handmade and hand-painted teapot by Katō Seishō
A masterfully crafted Kiyomizu porcelain teapot, handmade and hand-painted by renowned Japanese artisan, Katō Seishō.
Katō Seishō works from his ceramic studio near Sennyū-ji Temple in Kyoto. The white porcelain base is made by his father, Seishō the Second, while the detailed painting and finishing are done by Seishō himself.
On the teapot in medallions resembling zen buddhist temple windows, there are hand-painted scenes of birds resting on tree branches surrounded with imaginary flowers. This fine blue under-glazing style is called Shonzui and it originates from China. It was produced in private kilns in Jingdezhen during the late Ming Dynasty (1628–1644). The porcelain features detailed brushwork using cobalt blue pigment, applied before glazing and firing at high temperatures to achieve a vivid, durable finish.
This special type of teapot is traditionally used in Japanese senchado (sencha tea ceremony). It features thick walls, giving it a substantial weight, as well as a relatively large capacity. However, it is typically filled only to about 50 percent during use, in keeping with sencha brewing practices.
Katō Seishō has showcased his work at prestigious events, including the Japan Sencha Crafts Exhibition, part of the annual National Sencha Tea Ceremony Gathering held each May at Ōbakusan Manpuku-ji Temple.
The teapot comes in a wooden box signed by the master.
Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery looks back on 400 years history, and is now a symbol of Kyoto. To serve the desire of Aristocrats, tea masters and culinary specialists of the era, Kyo or Kiyomizu pottery has incorporated design and artistry not only from Japan but also from China and the Korean Peninsula. Even up to now exquisite artistry and excellent craftsmanship is a core quality of Kyo ware: each piece is modeled and decorated carefully by hand.

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse the teapot with lukewarm (not hot) water, then let it dry completely.
Usage:
Sudden temperature changes—such as pouring in boiling water or exposing the teapot to an open flame—may cause it to crack or break.
Avoid placing it in high-temperature environments such as a microwave, oven, or on a stove.
Use the teapot only for its intended purpose.
Cleaning:
Rinse thoroughly with warm water after each use, and allow it to dry completely to prevent mold.
Do not use a dishwasher, dryer, or dish soap.
Avoid scrubbing areas decorated with color or gold.
In case of discoloration, never use bleach or harsh chemicals.
Storage:
Always ensure the teapot is completely dry before storing. Storing it while damp may lead to unpleasant odors or mold.
