Honshudei Chachō
Handmade Tokoname teapot from Jin Tanikawa • 70 ml
Handmade Tokoname pottery by Jin Tanikawa.
It is delivered with a wooden box signed by the Master.
This Honshudei teapot is made of Tokoname Tazuchi – literally meaning rice field (ta) soil (tsuchi). They use the deeper soil layers of the rice field to make the clay. These layers have high viscosity and keep the water well, thus makes it suitable for clay.
During the urbanization of Tokoname, like in the case of many other cities, the new living areas were built on parcels previously used as rice fields. During that time, Tanikawa Jin bought a large amount of Shudei clay found in these grounds and have been using it to make teapots.
The Honshudei clay has a yellowish-brown color, that turns red during firing thanks to its high iron content. In Tokonama, many use electronic kilns, but Tanikawa Jin still uses gas kilns, constantly keeping an eye on the fire and temperature, to achieve the perfect results. The firing process takes about 30 hours. Thanks to this firing technique, the surface of each teapot becomes slightly different, making every piece unique.

Handling precautions
Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it in hot water then let it dry completely!
Usage:
Avoid placing in a place with high temperatures, such as a microwave, oven, or stove.
Cleaning:
Tokoname teapots become glossy as you use them. Oil impurities may become mixed in, but if you wash it the glossiness will remain.
Wash with dishwashing detergent should the surface become blackish. Its beautiful gloss will remain.
Do not use dishwasher or dryer! Wash with dishwashing detergent should the surface become blackish.
To clean built in strainer, run water backwards from the spout, or use a toothbrush or toothpick.
In case of discoloration, do not use any kind of bleach!
Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored while still wet, it might develop a damp smell or mold.
Non-glazed ceramic tea pots absorb whatever we put in them, so always only prepare one kind of tea in them (green tea, black tea, roasted tea, etc).
