Handmade teacup glazed with silver on the inside
Art work of Seiji Itoh, Jinshu pottery.
Tea cups made out of the same clay as Gokuhira Kyusu by Seiji Itoh, but not with throwing pottery, but using a special technique; First the artist presses the clay on a wooden panel that has Asanoha (Hemp leaf) pattern engraved on it. After pressing the pattern into the clay he removes it and puts it in a mould to give it the shape of a tea cup. After it takes up the cup shape he adds clay to form the bottom of the cup.
Once the form is ready, the artist paints the inside silver, then comes the firing. During firing the inside becomes white, so the inside is then polished to bring back the silver color and bring out the Asanoha pattern.
Chahai Asanohamon tea cups are entirely hand-made and unique, no two tea cups look exactly the same. There are differences in both the shape and pattern of each piece as a result of the special technique used to make them.
Some pieces were even made using the side of the pattern, so part of the finished product does not have the Asanoha pattern on it but is smooth. The artist found this really interesting and beautiful, so continued making these kinds as well.
