Hand-crafted by Hideo Morisato, the third-generation master of the Tōraku kiln, this tea bowl showcases the kiln's unique use of the Mishima technique, a traditional form of inlay decoration.

In the Mishima technique, patterns are incised, stamped, or carved into the clay, then filled with a contrasting colored slip. Once dry, the surface is carefully scraped clean, leaving behind crisp, decorative inlays. This technique, believed to have originated in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty and introduced to Japan in the 15th century, is celebrated for its delicate beauty and refined craftsmanship.

Hideo Morisato has developed a distinctive approach called “Murasaki Mishima” or “Shisaikamon,” named after the unique purple-hued clay used in their artworks. The designs are made with ceramic stamps, forming repeating patterns that give the piece a unique and dynamic look. Alongside the inlaid motifs, the bowl features “Ukihanamon”—bulging flower patterns—painted with white “Deisho” slip.

Finished with layers of purple and blue glaze and accented with gold paint, this bowl highlights the elegance and artistry of the Mishima technique in a truly refined form.

We have two unique Shisaikamon tea bowls.
A) Purple Shisaikamon Chawan
B) Purple and blue Shisaikamon Chawan

The tea bowl comes in a paulownia wood box signed by the artist.
