A handmade and hand-painted tempered glass. If held right side up, the decoration reminds of icicles but held upside down, the tea bowl reveals the snow-covered Mt Fuji. Either way, the chawan has a cooling and fresh vibe, perfect for a refreshing tea on a hot summer day.

“Hira” chawan are flat and wide tea bowls commonly used in summer, as their shape allows matcha to cool more quickly. Giyaman derives from the word diamond. Originally, it referred to high-quality imported glass prized for its diamond-like brilliance and sparkle. Here, it refers to the soft, irregular glow of the surface.

The bowl is heat resistant and suitable for both hot and cold tea.

About the Yamaoke Kiln
Yamaoka Zenkō (善高) is a potter based in Kyoto and works at the family-run Zenshō-gama (善昇窯) kiln. Born in 1966, he studied ceramics in Kyoto and spent seven years apprenticing in the Kiyomizu-yaki pottery district before joining his father's workshop. The kiln was founded by his father, Yamaoka Zenshō (善昇), a respected Kyoto potter and Traditional Craftsman. The Yamaoka family is especially known for its finely painted ceramics, featuring detailed hand-painted designs and rich overglaze decoration. At Zenshō-gama, the entire process—from shaping the clay to the final painting—is carried out in the workshop. Today, Zenkō and his son, yamaoka Yoshitaka continues this tradition, creating elegant Kyoto pottery and glassware with great attention to craftsmanship and detail.
