Matcha Zenraku

Entry-level ceremonial matcha from Maruyasu

Matcha Zenraku Matcha Zenraku Matcha Zenraku Matcha Zenraku Matcha Zenraku

Zenraku is an entry-level matcha with a dark chocolaty aroma, light body and pleasant tartness. It has a vibrant green flavor with subtly marine notes in the background. The aftertaste has slight citrusy notes. This tea is on the edgy side which makes it ideal for lattes and soft drinks.

The meaning of Matcha Zenraku "抹茶禅楽" :
Zenraku literally means peace in zen and refers to a deep, inner stillness and clarity, a state of mind that is calm, grounded, and fully present.

Maruyasu was established in 1872 and has since become a renowned tea manufacturer. Its representative, Yasushi Maeno, holds the prestigious title of "chashi kyudo," one of the highest qualifications for tea specialists in Japan.

How to prepare

As Usucha:
STEP 1) Put 2g (0.4 US tsp, 1 teaspoon or 2 chashaku scoops) matcha powder into a suitable tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 75 ml (2.53 fl oz) of 90℃ (194°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Whisk with a chasen (tea whisk) until foamy.

Freshness is the most important thing for the enjoyment of Matcha. Drink it fast, before it cools.

❖ Before Step 1, warm up the tea bowl with hot water, then dry it with a cloth to create the perfect temperature so make the most delicious matcha with a fresh scent while preparing. (Optional)
❖ To prevent clotting of the matcha powder, sift it through a fine strainer before use. (Strongly recommended)
❖ After the matcha is done, drink it immediately, because as it cools down it gets more and more bitter. (Recommended)
❖ Freshness is the most important thing for the enjoyment of Matcha. It is best to use up the tea within one month of opening. (Strongly recommended)

Taste was ok. Flavor reminded me of dark chocolate with fruity notes, though it was also grassy and a bit astringent. Texture was very coarse, even compared to Maruyasu's other blends, and was uncomfortable to drink. It reflected a bit in the flavor too, as sometimes it just tasted like drinking tea flavored water with sand-grain sized matcha particles inside. It's not the worst, but I wouldnt get this again, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Zenraku Matcha from Maruyasu is a new entry-level matcha, and I was genuinely curious to try it. Since it’s marketed as a good option for lattes, my first test was an iced matcha latte. Unfortunately, it didn’t deliver. The color is quite dull, lacking the vibrant green that even everyday drinking matcha usually shows. More importantly, the grind is unusually coarse compared to typical matcha (to be fair Maruyasu's matcha is a coarse grind compared to other brands). When whisked into cold milk, the texture stays unpleasantly grainy, you can feel particles no matter how much time you spend whisking with a chasen. It also drinks like a low-grade matcha: high in caffeine, low in l-theanine, with the jittery, unbalanced effect I know all too well after tasting dozens of matcha types. Half a cup was enough; I ended up pouring out the rest. For me, this isn’t a matcha for drinks at all. It might have some use in baking or recipes where the texture isn’t as noticeable, but not in a cup. Sorry, Maruyasu. You can do better. Please, do better.
