Competition-Grade Matcha from Maruyasu, Offering Sweet Vanilla Aroma and Pleasing Aftertaste
Matcha Tendō is a traditionally granite-stone ground matcha tea, made by experts from carefully selected tencha leaves. All ingredients of the tea have won medals at the Japanese National Tea Competition. This year’s blend features the cultivars Asahi, Ujihikari, Samidori, and Saemidori.
Aroma and Tasting Notes
The dry powder carries a gentle, sweet fragrance reminiscent of vanilla with refreshing citrus and peachy notes, plus a soft creamy undertone.
When prepared as usucha (2g in 70ml at 80 to 90°C), it releases a beautiful aromatic, slightly spicy fragrance. The flavor has a fresh, raw edge with pleasant depth and a refined bitterness that appears at higher temperatures (use 80°C if you prefer it milder or no bitterness).
The aftertaste of this tea blooms beautifully, developing into a soft sweetness with lingering notes of propolis flower and honey (without overt sweetness), creamy butter, and subtle almond nuttiness. It offers a light, refreshing mouthfeel.
For koicha (thick tea), Tendō shows a balanced floral character with creamy, buttery richness and a lingering almond-like nuttiness. It pairs exceptionally well with traditional Japanese sweets such as yōkan.
Besides Matcha Jikō and Komyō, Tendō is the third member of Maruyasu's competitive matcha blend series.

As Usucha:
STEP 1) Put 2g (0.4 US tsp, 1 teaspoon or 2 chashaku scoops) matcha powder into a tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 70 ml (2.37 fl oz) of 90℃ (194°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Whisk with a chasen (tea whisk) until foamy.
As Koicha:
STEP 1) Put 4g (0.8 US tsp, 2 teaspoon or 4 chashaku scoops) matcha powder into a tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 30-40 ml (1-1.35 fl oz) of 80℃ (176°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Gently mix with a chasen (tea whisk) until smooth.
❖ (Optional) Before Step 1, warm the tea bowl with hot water, then dry it to create the ideal temperature for preparing the best matcha.
❖ (Strongly recommended) Sift the matcha through a fine strainer to prevent clumping.
❖ (Recommended) Drink immediately after preparation, as matcha might become more bitter as it cools.
❖ (Strongly recommended) For best freshness, consume within one month of opening.

I brought this to my tea house and everyone loved it. They liked it more than bigger brand more expensive ones.

I’m relatively new to koicha and have been trying a bunch. This may be the finest koicha or matcha generally I’ve ever had. Can make it as thick as you like - I was around 2 tsp and maybe 1.5 oz water just enough to get it to pour - and it tastes like the sweetest richest freshest English green peas you’ve ever had. No nutty or other flavors like the Jiku and Komyo - also excellent - but for koicha in particular this is a couple of notches above both of those. I definitely have to use strainer first (I think the foil pouch matches are a bit more moist and clump more) but for special occasions worth it. As an usucha it’s terrific tho I think not as distinctive. If you love thick sweet koicha you have to try this.

An incredible addition to the Maruyasa line. Jiko and Komyo are such excellent quality matchas on their own, I had to try Tendo when saw there was a new release (despite no reviews!). I'm a huge fan of Jiko - it's an excellent high quality, sweet matcha. Who knew what this (a whole new price point for Maruyasa) would offer? The quality is immediate with its incredibly full, fresh aroma. No floral notes like Jiko nor nuttiness like Komyo. Whereas Jiko is bright and sweet with a middling body, Tendo brings an incredibly full body that never seems to dissipate (indeed 15 minutes after while writing this it lingers!). It hits you with a milky creaminess. Sometimes you notice some mineral notes, sometimes pea, other times buttery. No matter how you look at it, this is a matcha that is along the quality of the single origin Horii Shichimeien (reminds me of Mumon in particular) and Hekisuien Hekisui. You'd be remiss to not give this a try. Maruyasa exceeded the already high bar they set with their previous two matcha releases. This could very well be your go to matcha for a special occasion - it definitely will be for me.
