The playful figure on the handle is a stylized 'Mandarin' who were high ranking officials in China.

About the pattern

The cup and saucer is decorated in the Chinoiserie style which borrowed patterns, colors and styles from Chinese porcelain and was fused with local European taste. Chinoiserie was popular among the European nobility from the 18th century. The Tupini décor was created in 1870, inspired by the vibrant enamel hues of Arabian ceramics. With just a handful of borrowed motifs from the Orient, Herend’s master artisans brought to life a rich world—evoking the warmth, spice, and enchantment of the tales from Arabian Nights.

The Tupini pattern got its name after the Tupini family who was one of the most affluent merchant families in Medieval Rome. They traded textiles and other luxury items with the Middle East for the Italian elite who loved foreign art styles. Over time, these motifs and patterns gradually seeped into local artistic traditions and the Tupini Rose pattern came to life. It blends Arabian motives with Chinoiserie style and motifs like chrysanthemum, a popular imperial flower in China and Japan symbolizing prosperity.

About the legacy
Tupini Rose pattern has caught the eye of the Shah of Persia who ordered a set adorned in this style for himself.
