Exclisive Sazen Tea seated bronze statue of Sen no Rikyū
This elegant statue depicts Sen no Rikyū, the legendary 16th-century tea master and the spiritual founder of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu). Born during a time of political chaos, Rikyū introduced the philosophy of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and transience. His minimalist aesthetic transformed lavish tea rituals into quiet, meditative experiences centered on humility and inner peace. Crafted with serene detail, this statue captures Rikyū’s contemplative presence and enduring legacy. A perfect piece for tea enthusiasts, Zen practitioners, or lovers of Japanese culture. Display it in your tea room, meditation space, or as a tribute to one of Japan’s most influential cultural figures.
Takenaka Masaharu, the artist who created this statue, is one of the esteemed craftsmen of Takaoka Copperware – he is a 4th generation sculptor, and his ancestors also created works for the imperial family.
Takaoka copperware (known in Japanese as Takaoka Doki) is a traditional craft produced in the Takaoka area of Toyama Prefecture. It has a history of over 400 years, starting in the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1609, Toshinaga Maeda, the second lord of the Kaga domain (now Toyama Prefecture), took control of Takaoka Castle. To develop the area, he brought in seven casting masters in 1611. These artisans set up a casting plant and began making iron goods for daily use, like farm tools and pots. Renowned for its exceptional quality, Takaoka copperware is now considered one of the finest of Japan’s metalcraft traditions.
