Culinary Zhejiang Matcha

This organic matcha is a cooking-grade tea, specially recommended for lattes, ice creams, baked goods, and other desserts. Thanks to its natural creaminess, it makes rich, textured lattes. The taste profile is similar to that of Japanese cooking matcha, it is verdant, creamy, and slightly nutty. It gives you a strong, energizing boost.

Matcha became iconic in Japan, and most of the world now knows it as a traditional Japanese green tea. But in fact, it is based on ancient Chinese traditions—powdered green tea was first born in China. The history of powdered green tea goes all the way back to Tang Dynasty China, but it was likely during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) that it was first whisked with hot water in a tea bowl, much like how matcha is prepared today.

Although China is now better known for its wonderful loose-leaf teas, powdered green tea is making a quiet comeback, and its quality is rising once again. This particular matcha comes from Zhejiang Province, grown in tea fields free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The tea is organic, although we currently do not have Japanese organic certification for it. We’ve brought in a small first batch to see if there’s interest. If there is, we plan to issue our own certification to formally confirm its organic nature.
