Stand doll-shaped ceramic container
Handmade and hand-painted Raku-ware ceramic incense container (Kogo). It is crafted in the shape of "Tachibina" (standing doll), the most traditional and elegant form of dolls displayed for Japan's annual Girl’s Day in March. This special day is a time-honored tradition where families pray for the healthy growth, happiness, and bright future of young girls. The soft texture and warm colors unique to Raku-ware beautifully enhance the gentle and serene expression of the doll.
Kōgo is a traditional ceremonial utensil used for storing incense. During the "chaji", the above-mentioned tea gathering where guests are served "kaiseki" (traditional Japanese course meal) then both koicha (thick tea) and usucha (thin tea). Placing incense in the "ro" (sunken hearth) during "sumitemae" (putting the charcoal for the fire) is part of the ceremony. This kneaded incense is stored in small containers and then put on the ash where the heat of the charcoal makes it pleasantly fragrant.
