Shunso Kiseto Chawan

Handmade matcha tea bowl by master Shunsō from the Higashi Kiln.

The teabowl features the so-called "susuki" or silver grass. Susuki is a traditional symbol of autumn in Japan and one of the Seven Flowers of Autumn. It is closely associated with moon viewing and the autumn harvest, and its delicate, swaying plumes have long been celebrated in Japanese art and seasonal decoration.

Kiseto is a traditional Akazu glaze, that was developed in the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600). It is a yellow iron glaze, containing around 10% iron, traditionally used for tea utensils, plates, and bowls.

The teabowl comes in a paulownia wood box signed by the artist.

About master Shunsō
Nakajima Mitsuhisa, known by his artistic name Shunsō, is a traditional potter who works with the techniques of Akazu ware. His work is particularly associated with tea utensils, including Oribe, Kiseto, and Shino tea bowls. He has received several awards in recognition of his work preserving and carrying forward the long tradition of Akazu ware.

Akazu Ware (Akazu-yaki) is a traditional Japanese pottery from the Akazu district of Seto, Aichi Prefecture. It is a form of Seto Ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, alongside Bizen, Tamba, Echizen, Shigaraki, and Tokoname.
Akazu Ware has a history of more than a thousand years. It was the first among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns to develop and use glazed pottery. From the Heian period onward, a wide variety of glazes and decorative techniques were developed. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Akazu became especially valued for tea utensils as the tea ceremony flourished.
