Bessan Tenmoku Chawan

Handmade tea bowl by master Oketani Teiichi.

This tea bowl is a replica of the famous tenmoku chawan made in the Chinese Ji Zhou kiln in the Southern Song dynasty.

It is made with a special double-glazing technique. After applying the first coat of glaze the master removes it in random places and then applies a clear glaze coating. The result resembles the shell of the Hawksbill turtle, "Bekko". That is where the name comes from.
Turtles are the symbol of longevity and are popular symbols in art.

The bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the artist.
We also include a chakin (small linen cloth to wipe the tea bowl) as a gift.
