SEN NO RIKYU black wooden statue
Hand-carved statue of the famous Japanese tea master of matcha tea.
Sen no Rikyū (千利休, 1522 – April 21, 1591) was born in Osaka prefecture as the son of a warehouse owner but in his 58 years became a honored tea master for Oda Nobunaga and later Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Imperial Regent of Japan.
With his work Rikyū represented four principles:
1. Harmony (和) -To get along well with each other; to live in harmony with each other
2. Respect (敬) - To respect each other
3. Purity (清) - To be pure
4. Tranquility (寂) - The mind that is always serene
He perfected 'thatched hut tea' (sōan-cha) as a spiritual world embracing anyone, regardless of social class or title.
