Copper incense holder decorated with a lion and phoenixes
Incense holder made of copper for cone-shape incense. It is decorated with "shishi", a noble beast that has protective power, often guarding temples and shrines. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol of nobility, good luck, and peace.
This type of incense holder can be used for both cone-shape incense and incense stick. Traditionally, ash is placed inside, and the cone or stick is inserted into it.
Takaoka copperware is regarded as one of the finest in Japanese copperware production. It has a history of over 400 years, starting in the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1609, Toshinaga Maeda, the second lord of the Kaga domain (now Toyama Prefecture), took control of Takaoka Castle. To develop the area, he brought in seven casting masters in 1611. These artisans set up a casting plant and began making iron goods for daily use, like farm tools and pots.
