Jinshu Sorairo Arashi Shibori Kyusu

Stylish and unique back-handled teapot from the renowned ceramic artist, Itō Seiji. On the inside, the teapot is unglazed and has a large, fine ceramic mesh. Master Itō is well-known for his extraordinary precision, and unique designs that blend modern aesthetics with tradition. His teapots have a smooth pour that shows the artist’s exceptional clay-forming skills.

The sky-blue glaze on the outside is his specialty, and it stands between the usual ceramic glaze and engobe in viscosity.

The finish is created using arashi shibori, a modern Japanese clay-forming and firing technique. The artist first shapes the teapot into a rounded form, then, before firing, slowly and carefully presses the walls outward from the inside. This process subtly reshapes the vessel while creating delicate surface fissures in the clay. The resulting fine crackled patterns evoke arashi (“storm”) — reminiscent of lightning and rain.

About Itō Seiji
The artist, the Tokoname based Itō Seiji is celebrated internationally for his refined and elegant teapots and tea accessories, suitable for both Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese tea sessions. Itō Seiji has received top honors including the Grand Prize at the Chōzō Prize Ceramic Exhibition (twice), the Prime Minister’s Award at the Tokoname Ceramic Art Exhibition, and an Excellence Award at the 34th Banko Ceramics Competition (2020). Internationally, his work has been awarded the Special Jury Award at the 6th Taiwan Teapot Ceramics Exhibition and the Silver Award at the 1st World Teapot Art Grand Prize in Yixing, China.

About Tokoname pottery:
Tokoname is a historic pottery town in Aichi Prefecture and one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with production dating back over 1,000 years. It’s best known for unglazed, high-fired stoneware made from iron-rich red clay.
A large prehistoric body of water often called Ancient Lake Tōkai covered much of the region millions of years ago. As the lake repeatedly expanded and shrank, it laid down thick layers of fine sediments mixed with iron-bearing minerals from surrounding mountains. Over time, those sediments compressed into the iron-rich clays found today around Tokoname.
That ancient lake environment is a big reason the Tōkai region became such a strong center for ceramics.
