Banko-yaki (Banko ware) has a history of roughly 300 years. The first Banko teapots date back to the Genbun era (1736–1740, Edo period), when a merchant named Nunami Rozan, captivated by the Way of Tea, built a kiln in the town of Asahi in Mie Prefecture and began making his own pottery. What started as a merchant’s hobby eventually grew into a world-renowned form of earthenware, recognized as a “Traditional Craft” by Japan’s Ministry of Economy. Today, more than 100 Banko-yaki kilns operate, centered around the cities of Yokkaichi and Komono in Mie Prefecture.
