Jin Hakudei Mogake Shiboridashi

Tokoname teapot decorated with Mogake technique

Tanikawa Jin's artwork.

The teapot, as its name - hakudei - suggests, is made of white clay. The pattern on the surface is achieved with "Mogake technique" developed back in the 19th century. The teapot is wrapped with Amamo seaweed, which reacts with the clay and oxidizes during firing. The result is this unique pattern, bearing the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.

Jin Hakudei Mogake shiboridashi has exceptionally tall walls. Thanks to that, the clay does not get overheated around the rim, even if hot water is used for brewing tea, so the pot is not only suitable for premium Japanese green teas, but it is ideal for Chinese and Taiwanese teas as well. It is a slow pouring teapot, ideal for Gyokuro.

Place of origin: Tokoname, Japan

Handling precautions

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!

Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like a stove, and never use it in a microwave or oven.

Cleaning:
Tea stain is the natural part of a teapot's "maturing process", but if you prefer to avoid it, rinse the teapot well after every use, and do not let the tea leaves sit in it for too long. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your pot. Never use bleach!
Avoid using the dishwasher or dryer!
As you touch it, your hands' natural moisture might leave stains on the surface. You can easily remove that by gently rubbing it with your fingers.

Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.

Non-glazed ceramic tea pots absorb scents and flavors, so only prepare one class of tea in them (green tea, black tea, roasted tea, etc).

Pleased with this. It's great for when you want to make many small brews. As the other reviewer mentioned, if you want to make one big cup, you'll need something larger. This can be an advantage sometimes as it forces you to slow down with the tea. And if it doesn't decant fast enough, one can learn to lift the lid very slightly with your thumb as you pour it. The art quality of the finish is very beautiful in its simplicity. If you ask, you can choose specifically the one you want from a photo of them, since they are all a little different.

My first shiboridashi and I'm so happy, thank you!

I must say I am quite disappointed by this particular shiboridashi although I've loved all of the other teaware I have bought from Sazen. It is beautiful but quite impractical for a number of reasons: The capacity is more like 150ml when 80% full (and 175ml when filled) than 100ml. Appreciate there may be differences in measuring the usable capacity of a shiboridashi but that is not really within the usual margin of error I expect when seeing the capacity in the listing. It's capacity would only be 100ml if you filled it about halfway up. The pour is also painfully slow even by shiboridashi standards. It takes about 30 seconds or more to decant. It is just exacerbated by the fact the capacity is much higher than listed. That is fine for iced or cold brewing gyokuro, but in any other circumstance it makes it hard to control the brewing parameters of the teas correctly.

Beautiful teapot and craftsmanship. The teacups are perfect, too!
