Yamanaka Nuri lacquer matcha container by Minowa Issey
Minowa Issei's artwork.
Hand-made, lacquer coated wooden tea container, for matcha tea ceremony.
The natsume is decorated with "koi" fish, using "maki-e" technique. The artist paints on the surface with lacquer, then sprinkles gold and silver powder on the picture before the lacquer dries, then smoothes the lines with a fine brush.
Koi fish swims against the current, and even climbs waterfalls, which made it a well-known symbol of overcoming obstacles. Strength, tenaciousness, bravery and prosperity is among the many great values it stands for.
On the back of the lid, a dragon is depicted with "maki-e". Similarly to the koi symbolizing strength and courage.
