Handmade and hand-painted porcelain teacup from Miyayoshi Yumiko
An exquisite, handmade and hand-painted Kutaniyaki teacup from master Miyayoshi Yumiko.
The tea cup features "takarazukushi", which is a traditional Japanese design motif that means “an assortment of treasures.” It refers to decorative patterns that feature a collection of symbolic lucky items—such as coins, scrolls, mallets, and other auspicious objects—arranged together. These motifs represent good fortune, prosperity, and abundance.
The porcelain walls are so delicate that they become translucent in sunlight.
The tea cups are also offered as a set of five.
About the artist, Miyayoshi Yumiko:
Yumiko Miyayoshi, a certified Traditional Crafts Artist, has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major department stores and galleries across Japan. She has been consistently recognized at the Traditional Kutani Crafts Exhibition, earning prestigious awards such as the Technical Award (Maeda Award) in 2019. Her work continues to bring the elegance of Kutani ware to everyday life through vessels that combine traditional beauty with practical, joyful design.
Yumiko Miyayoshi believes that the true beauty of pottery is revealed through direct use. Influenced by both traditional Kutani techniques and the natural landscapes of her childhood, she seeks to capture elegance and harmony in her work. Today, she focuses on creating vessels in deep blue that bring joy, color, and a sense of everyday delight to those who use them.
About Kutaniyaki:
The term "Kutani" means "Nine Valleys" and was first mentioned in 1655. They say the long, freezing, and colorless winters of the Hokuriku region made locals crave colors and thus, Kutaniyaki, the traditional ceramic style of the region was born. Kutaniyaki is using vivid and bold colors, making their style unmistakable.
The cup comes in a paper gift box.
