Kinpaku Chunatsume Horaisan Makie
Yamanaka Nuri lacquer canister from Fukui prefecture
This Natsume (棗) is handcraft Matcha container by Issei Minowa, traditional Makie artist from Sabae city, Fukui prefecture.
It is said that 1,300 years ago, on the peaks of Horai-san (mountain) lived an ascetic monk and hermit. The myth of Mt Horai originates from Chinese mythology and is about an enchanted island with magical, healing powers and a "levitating" monk.
In Japanese illustrations, it is many times shown as a mountain on the back of a sea turtle swimming in the sea, with cranes flying all around it. This illustration is very often used in ceremonies and celebrations around new years.
Natsume is a tea ceremony tool, made to hold the matcha needed for the ceremony. While preparing for the ceremony, the tea master measures the needed amount of matcha powder into the natsume, that was designed especially for this; since it is not for storage but to present the matcha to the guests, it has a loose lid that is easy to remove and is not airtight.
