Gold-prized premium rock oolong from the Wuyi Mountains, China
TASTE NOTES
This Da hong Pao is a mind-blowing tea. The leaves have a fruity, milky aroma, and the flavor is deeply complex—in each brew there’s something new to notice. It’s impressively lasting, and each infusion brings out different notes, all of them delicious, and perfumy - almost sensual.
It begins with a woodsy, earthy character that melts into a floral-fruity flavor, with a gentle tangy sweetness lingering in the background. The classic Wuyi mineral taste is present too, giving the tea a grounded, steady depth.
The first couple of brews lean earthy, a little spicy, with a touch of cinnamon. Later infusions turn more floral and perfumy, reminiscent of lily of the valley. After the fourth or fifth brew, a clear fruitiness becomes the focus, and a mellow pineapple note takes the lead.
Complex, expressive, and consistently impressive—this tea fully lives up to its reputation.
Rock teas age beautifully, developing deeper, more intricate flavors over time.
About Da Hong Pao:
Da Hong Pao is one of China’s most famous and revered Wuyi rock teas, celebrated for its rich flavor and deep cultural history. It’s seen as a symbol of rarity and prestige, with the original mother bushes treated like national treasures. Even today, drinking Da Hong Pao is considered a taste of tradition, respect, and legend.
The legend of Da Hong Pao:
Several legends surround the origin of Da Hong Pao, but the most famous tells of a scholar who fell ill on his way to the imperial exams and was revived by tea given to him by a monk from Tianxin Temple. After winning first place, the scholar later used the same tea to help cure the emperor’s illness. In gratitude, the emperor granted him a red robe and ordered it to be placed on the tea bushes—an honor meant to show imperial thanks. From then on, the trees became known as Da Hong Pao, the “Big Red Robe.”
