Like every season, Fall in Japan has its own distinctive flavors, plants, colors, and symbols that make it special.

In the tea world, this is the season of Tsubokiri. Tsubokiri means “breaking of the seal”. After the spring harvest, tea leaves are stored in sealed clay jars and kept in cool chambers to mature slowly over several months. By mid-fall, usually around October, the seals on these jars are finally broken, and the rich seasonal teas are ready to drink. Fall is also the time when the most precious and highest-grade teas, kept to mature during the summer, are finally released to be enjoyed at their best.

Autumn’s arrival is marked by some of Japan’s most iconic symbols. It’s the time when Autumn flowers like chrysanthemums, bellflowers, and silver grass come into our homes and tearooms, and autumn foliage, especially the golden ginkgo and crimson maple leaves, starts to become a main part of seasonal decoration. The persimmon (kaki) and the citrusy yuzu also stand out with their vibrant colors and sweet, crisp flavors, perfectly reflecting the essence of fall.

A beloved activity in Fall is admiring the autumn full moon and strolling under the brilliant autumn foliage. These have all become familiar and much-loved symbols of the season.
