As summer ends and the air turns cool and crisp, Japan once again shows a different kind of beauty with the colors and charm of autumn. Like every season, fall has its own flowers, colors, and symbols to enjoy.

Like every season, fall in Japan has its own distinctive flavors, plants, colors, and symbols that make it special.

In the tea world, this is the season of Tsubokiri. Tsubokiri means “breaking of the seal”. After the spring harvest, tea leaves are stored in sealed clay jars and kept in cool chambers to mature slowly over several months. By mid-fall, usually around October, the seals on these jars are finally broken, and the rich seasonal teas are ready to drink. 

Autumn’s arrival is marked by some of Japan’s most iconic symbols. One of the most beloved is the maple (momiji) and gingko leaves, which turn brilliant shades of yellow, red, and orange, capturing the fleeting beauty of the season. The persimmon (kaki) and the citrusy yuzu also stand out with their vibrant colors and sweet, crisp flavors, perfectly reflecting the essence of fall.

This time of year is full of special traditions too. People enjoy Momiji-gari—visiting spots to admire autumn leaves—, many shrines hold harvest festivals to give thanks for the year’s crops, and families gather for Tsukimi, the moon-viewing festival, enjoying the full moon. These events have helped make several symbols representative of fall.
